Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean more than 500 miles east of Madagascar, which is located off the South East coast of the African continent. The current population of Mauritius is about 1.2 Million. Mauritius has a stable democratic government and growing economy.

Mauritius is often called ‘a slice of paradise on the Indian Ocean’. One of the most popular destinations for tourists from all over the world, Mauritius enchants tourists with its amazing beauty and serenity. In spite of being closer to Africa, Mauritius is more influenced by Britain, France and India. Mauritius is very popular with tourists due to its multitude of colours and tastes, its calm turquoise seas, beautiful white beaches and exotic flora and fauna. Mauritius is truly an oasis of peace and tranquillity.

Mauritius culture is a blend different cultures – Indian, Chinese, African (creole) and French. It is a melting pot where past and present are smoothly blended together in harmony. The major festivals of Mauritius are Christmas, Idul Fitr, Diwali and Cavadee. Mauritius is dotted with a lot of temples, churches and mosques.

The most common language spoken in Mauritius is Creole. The official language is English but most newspapers and TV programmes are in French. Most Mauritians are fluent in English and French, some may even speak other languages such as Hindi, Urdu or Mandarin.

The climate is tropical – warm, dry winter (May to October); hot, wet, humid summer (November to April). Tropical cyclone season runs from December through March.
