Coaching and Self Awareness
Coaching and Self Awareness
The whole process of coaching is to give the coachee the benefit of developing their self awareness, as this enables them to have a clear perception of their personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation and emotions.
We may assume that we are self aware, but it is useful to have a comparative view and an understanding of how much self-awareness we have.
Self-awareness is the capacity for introspection, which is to look at one’s own conscious thoughts and feelings, with the ability to recognise oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. So in a nutshell self-awareness is about understanding your own needs, desires, failings, habits, and everything else that makes you tick. The more you know about yourself, the better you are at adapting to life changes that suit your needs. Of course, self-awareness is a big part of both coaching and philosophy.
Why Develop Self Awareness?
As you develop self-awareness you are able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind. Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions. Self-awareness is one of the attributes of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success.
Self-Awareness in Relationships
Relationships are the most important aspect of our lives, and they are normally easy until there is emotional discord. Relationship discords act out in the same way whether it be at work or in your personal life.
In order for you to make changes that suit you, you need to reframe how you have interpreted the discord, as this will change the impact that the discord has on your emotions and shift the emotional expectations of your relationships.
When you can change the emotions and reframe your expectations and behaviour in relationships you open up entirely to new possibilities happening in your life.
Having a clear understanding and putting in boundaries will help you to instill positive self affirming thoughts and patterns. Once you can understand how you work and operate this will help you to understand other people too.
Life coaching is the foundation of self-awareness and your coachees will develop their self-awareness through practice and by focusing their attention on the details of their personality and behavior.
Coaching will help your coachee to develop an interpersonal and intellectual understanding of themselves.
When you find yourself or your coachee in the process of an emotional reaction whether it be in anger or frustration, you will notice a lot of the thoughts and some triggers that build up towards those emotions. The trick here is to understand why or how this happened. This will lead you into developing your senses and support you to change the outcomes or indeed enable you to side track the emotional reaction. Remember people play people games, so you want to ensure you and or your coachee have the heightened awareness to support you to instinctively make better choices and or to reframe or remove yourself from the situation or the drama triangle, (which we will look at later)…
