Reflection is a key aspect of coaching and mentoring. A good coach or mentor will help the learner to reflect on their experience and to learn from it. This is something we all do to a greater or lesser extent naturally but in a coaching or mentoring relationship the process of reflection is more deliberate. Learning from experience involves looking back at your experiences and then looking forward to future activities and considering how you might do things differently as a result of your reflections. For reflection to be effective it needs to be ‘critical’ which means looking at your own experience, actions and emotions with a critical eye.
To reinforce the value of reflection I include a variety of reflective exercise within my coaching and mentoring practice and training. With the focus of what have I learnt about myself and others and what knowledge skills and insights have I gained?
