The Betrayal Bond

I’ve just finished listening to ‘The Betrayal Bond’. For the past seventeen years, it has served as the main resource for therapists and patients dealing with the effects of emotional pain and harm caused by exploitation from someone they trusted. As a coach and mentor, I have worked with many individuals who have experienced the following challenges.

Divorce, legal disputes, child abuse, domestic violence, and professional exploitation can lead to trauma bonding. These situations and relationships involve intense or important connections, which can lead to the exploitation of trust or power.

In “The Betrayal Bond,” Dr. Carnes presents an in-depth study of these relationships: why they form, who is most susceptible, and how they become so powerful. Dr. Carnes also gives a clear explanation of the bond that compels people to tolerate the intolerable and, for the first time, maps out the brain connection that makes being with hurtful people comparable to a “drug of choice.” Most importantly, Carnes provides practical steps to identify compulsive attachment patterns and ultimately to change or end them for good.

This new edition includes:

New scientific insights into how our brains can trap us in unhealthy relationships – Updated assessments and insights based on research from 50,000 participants – A new section incorporating the latest findings in attachment research and narrative therapy to rewrite and reshape negative experiences actively. – A redefinition of the factors that contribute to addictive relationships.

I highly recommend this book to any professional who focuses on supporting individuals.
