There are some books that give you information, and there are others that make you look at yourself a little differently. Your Body Is Your Brain by Amanda Blake belongs firmly in the second category.
I listened to this book on Audible, and I found its central idea both fascinating and surprisingly practical: our bodies are not simply carrying our brains around; they are an important part of how we think, feel, communicate, make decisions, and respond to the world around us.
Blake explores the concept of somatic intelligence, the idea that we can use awareness of our physical sensations, posture, movement, breathing and gestures to influence our emotional state and behaviour. Rather than treating the mind and body as two separate systems, the book encourages us to see them as deeply connected.
What I particularly enjoyed was the way Blake brings the subject to life through real-world stories. We hear about people who discover that changing something physical, from the way they exercise to the way they stand or move, can influence their confidence, relationships and ability to deal with difficult situations.
The examples make what could otherwise be a fairly abstract subject much easier to understand. The story of a Microsoft executive who changes her stance to develop greater credibility, for example, illustrates how something as simple as our physical presence can affect the way we are perceived. Other examples show how movement and bodily awareness can help people deal with anxiety, conflict and challenging conversations.
One of the book’s strengths is that it doesn’t simply tell us to “think positively.” In fact, one of its more interesting suggestions is that some limitations cannot be overcome through positive thinking alone. Sometimes, we may need to approach change through the body first. That idea stayed with me.
How we sit, stand, breathe, move and physically experience a situation can influence how we feel and how we respond. Becoming more aware of those signals can potentially give us another way of changing patterns that have become deeply ingrained.
I also appreciated the book’s broader application. Although leadership and the workplace feature prominently, the ideas aren’t restricted to executives or business professionals. The principles can be applied to relationships, communication, confidence, personal development and everyday situations where we find ourselves under pressure.
Listening to the audiobook format worked well for me. The material is engaging, and the storytelling makes it accessible while still introducing ideas drawn from a wide range of scientific disciplines.
That said, this isn’t a book I’d describe as a quick-fix manual. Some of the concepts require reflection and, more importantly, experimentation. The real value comes from trying the ideas for yourself and noticing what happens.
For me, the biggest takeaway was a simple one: pay more attention to what your body is telling you; this is what I continually talk about with my coachees.
We tend to spend so much time inside our heads trying to analyse problems, control our emotions and find the “right” answer that we can overlook the information coming from the rest of us. Your Body Is Your Brain offers an intriguing alternative — listen to the body as well.
If you’re interested in personal development, leadership, emotional intelligence, communication or the connection between mind and body, I think this book is well worth exploring.
It certainly left me thinking differently about something I normally take for granted: the intelligence of my own body.
My verdict: An engaging and thought-provoking exploration of the mind-body connection, with plenty of practical ideas to experiment with in everyday life.
Recommended for: Anyone interested in personal growth, leadership, confidence, relationships and understanding how our physical state influences the way we think and behave.
Until next time, stay focused, lead with intention, and continue to inspire through the elegance of your actions.
